Is there any way to make my brain stronger?

5 years ago I wrote this answer to a question on Quora. This answer has formed the basis of my book The Power of Discomfort and probably the basis of what I do when I'm feeling great. This answer went on to get 500k views and really struck me that a response that was quite ordinary, unscientific and basic would do so well.

Some of the points made are just one word.

My favourite one is :"Strength comes from discipline. The hard way is probably the way that is better for you. You know this already."

I was really writing this for myself. Reminding myself that the Hard Way is the way.

And really the Hard Way is the way. I've made this the first post in my blog because it forms the essence of what Rut Reset is about also. Its a back to basics list that brings perspective, better daily rituals and habits and through this strength arrives in.

When we do not feel great or are in a rut, we believe more comfort is what we need. Why on earth would we want discomfort when we are not feeling great. And actually comfort just leads to wanting more comfort. Discomfort brings strength.

  1. Discipline.

  2. Early morning starts

  3. Running & Exercise

  4. Switching off your phone. Delete Facebook. Ignore the red ticks.

  5. Not taking the pleasure option every time. Less sugar. Less alcohol. Just less. Say no. You will appreciate everything more.

  6. Cold showers. Before you scream. Google “benefits of cold shower”

  7. Meditate.

  8. Say No to destructive things. You know what they are. The temporary relief is not enough. You want longer lasting more subtle natural benefits

  9. Strength comes from discipline. The hard way is probably the way that is better for you. You know this already.

  10. Take a tiny tiny step.
