There is a reason why gym memberships and gyms do very well in January. It's dark. It's cold. It's a new year. A new dawn. Christmas can mean overindulgence, and we crave a return to health. A new year offers the opportunity or potential for it.
The Summer Indulgence Cycle
Summer holidays are similar in a different way. The sun shines, we spend more time outdoors, and we socialize more. Normal routines are broken, and we may well indulge. The social element in both instances is a significant part of it.
There is no doubt we need it.
I've had a summer like this. One would think that having a website called Power Habits Club would mean I never indulge. The reality is very different. Sunshine and beers, red wine, and lovely meals are probably my favorite things for a while. While I maintain a certain level of fitness, I know now that I really need a reset.
The Struggle with Routines
It is rather annoying that bad routines take zero time to form, while good routines feel like a struggle. Essentially, a new routine was created that involved a lot more alcohol and food. With increased alcohol consumption, my appetite for fitness diminishes, and the cycle loops, feeding on itself. Comfort food becomes the norm.
This weekend, I was at Oasis, and let's just say I gave it a good go. Balance is never my strong suit. I'm feeling a little tender and craving health badly.
Breaking the Cycle
So, I need to break this routine or, at a minimum, remind myself of what feeling healthy is like. If I am to make changes, the cycle looks like this:
Feeling Tender: After overindulgence, the appetite for change appears.
Change Begins: A reset happens. Feeling better usually returns after a few days. My goal is not weight loss or anything measurable; it's a tangible feeling of wellness. From wellness, everything else comes.
The Crossroads: Then the ritual and routine of alcohol and big food present themselves as tempting options. I must choose whether to continue the summer routine or break the habit and create a new one.
Pushing Past: I know from experience that it's crucial to push past this point. Reminding myself of what feeling healthy is like and getting enough reminders will help me keep going for longer.
The Reality of Health
Overall, feeling healthy does not offer the highs of big nights out. In a sense, it can feel rather subdued and boring. However, this boring and quiet state seems to grow into strength, calm, and focus.
Being aware of this cycle is half the battle. The loop can be daunting. Viewing it as a sacrifice means the reward mechanism has not had time to embed.
Choose Your Hard
Being unhealthy is hard. Being healthy is hard. Choose your hard.
Overall, my preference is to get back to feeling strong and healthy as quickly as possible. A combination of cold water, breathing exercises, fasting, movement, planning, and clean eating will be part of my journey.

As I embark on this journey, I remind myself that the path to wellness is not just about physical changes but also about mental clarity and emotional balance. The road may be challenging, but the rewards are worth it.
Embracing the Journey
In conclusion, embracing a healthy lifestyle is a continuous journey. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities for growth. By focusing on small, manageable changes, I can gradually shift my habits and create a sustainable routine.
Ultimately, the goal is to cultivate a lifestyle that supports my well-being, allowing me to thrive in all areas of life.
With determination and commitment, I will break the cycle of indulgence and rediscover the joy of feeling healthy. The journey may be tough, but I am ready to choose the hard path that leads to strength and vitality.
